{"id":26530,"date":"2025-10-10T16:19:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T16:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wisdom-trails.com\/?p=272"},"modified":"2026-05-19T11:39:36","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T11:39:36","slug":"obedience-or-chastening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/she-develops.com\/wisdom\/2025\/10\/10\/obedience-or-chastening\/","title":{"rendered":"Obedience or Chastening?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a sunny afternoon in high school, and our business teacher was teaching her heart out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I, on the other hand? I was trailing off, my eyes giving in to the allure of a siesta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I knew she loathed seeing us nod off in her class. She perpetually made it clear that it was a very grave offense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you feel sleepy, stand at the back of the class and you won\u2019t get into any trouble.\u201d She would holler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She ranked as the harshest teacher in the school, and we knew better than to cross her path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But on this fateful day, before I could amble to the back of the class, I conked out. And then she spotted me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next day, during lunch break, I was scrubbing the craggy bark of a tree using a brush, soap, and water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was the punishment she meted out on me &#8211; for napping in class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She instructed me to scour clean the imposing tree that stood right at the center of the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was in full view of both students and teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She had a list of other ridiculous punishments she tortured students with. Like filling a bucket with water using a spoon or digging a hole using a kitchen fork!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was back in my high school days in Kenya. Thankfully, things have changed now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because really, all I needed was a hug, but I digress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Needless to say, that was the last time I got into trouble with her in my four years in high school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I recently narrated this ordeal to my daughters, hoping for some sympathy and perhaps some snugly comforting hugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But my youngest quipped, \u201cBut mommy, you are the one who didn\u2019t follow your teacher\u2019s instructions!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have kept mulling over her words (and indifference) and got stirred to reflect on how our heavenly Father deals with us when we miss the mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>His Word First Instructs Us<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAll Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction,<strong>&nbsp;for instruction in righteousness.<\/strong>\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;(2 Timothy 3:16)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before God chastens us, He instructs us through His word. His desire is for us to lead righteous lives and has stipulated His will in the 66 books of the Bible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He handed us a life manual because He does not want us to prod in the dark, fumbling around, oblivious of His will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wants us to know how to respond in every situation. His perfect will is for us to be instructed in righteousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why He asks us to seek first His kingdom and&nbsp;<strong>righteousness&nbsp;<\/strong>(Mathew 6:33).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Righteousness is a big deal to God and comes first!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Little wonder that He asked Joshua not to veer off His laws to the right hand or the left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wanted him tethered to His will so that he would go on and prosper (Joshua 1:7).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you and I know that we don\u2019t always choose God\u2019s righteous paths- either out of ignorance or downright disobedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To realign and redirect us, God will often chasten us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enjoying the read? Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>He Chastens Us Because He Loves Us<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>For whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives.\u201d If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;(Hebrews 12:6-7).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cHe who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>(Proverbs 13:24).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s unusual to find parents unperturbed as their child\u2019s character deteriorates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loving parents will move heaven and earth to keep their children on the straight and narrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When push comes to shove, parents may even send a battalion of relatives to reason with the child or send them to a therapist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our loving Father, too, is highly invested in our righteousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He knows that when we perpetually miss the mark, we sabotage our progress and derail His purposes in our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He knows that sin separates us from Him and His will. Out of sheer love, He chastens us to redirect our hearts towards His will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a class=\"image-link image2 is-viewable-img can-restack\" href=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/$s_!FScN!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F52ce5f5f-d1f6-4f52-9286-3c07687871a0_1024x683.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/$s_!FScN!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F52ce5f5f-d1f6-4f52-9286-3c07687871a0_1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"AD 4nXf78dVEqgWcxXSNLFFSagkQsG8HiIzYRohCYMQnn1buMW 89oSOuYESCUf9rlAOYE5Wj0OQkBvuaU12KqJil7sUb8VwT6PyX2sCgsXFcIm9LlSADPWc7PlhsNQgr CUsUyoZ9Cgcw?key=cTB7kWVypXu7qtBvWXLKyg\" title=\"Obedience or Chastening- Which Do You Choose?\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Chastening Hurts<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.<\/em>\u201d (Hebrews 12:11).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can either allow God\u2019s word to train us in righteousness, or we can be trained through chastening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The choice is ours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This choice is nestled in the decisions we make every day as we go about life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only that chastening hurts. I have been chastened by God more times than I can count, and it has often hurt so bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t like it. But the pain swerves me towards righteousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our righteousness is God\u2019s end goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David knew firsthand the benefits of chastening. Here is his confession:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cBefore I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep Your word.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;(Psalm 119:67).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His affliction accomplished exactly what God had intended (in the first place).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don\u2019t be Discouraged When Chastened<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have been there, sulking after being chastened. Sucking my thumb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Feeling downright discouraged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have behaved like my young daughters, who stomp away in fury and crawl into a pitiful corner after being disciplined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that moment, they want nothing to do with whoever was redirecting them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because chastening stings. It can get grisly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him<\/em>\u201d (Hebrews 12:5).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God doesn\u2019t want us to stomp away from him but to draw nearer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wants us to pay attention to the areas He is aligning in our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He chastens us for our own good, so we ought to respond in gratitude and reverence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We should neither take his chastening lightly nor get discouraged by it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are you reeling from the pain that comes with God\u2019s chastening?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chin up. Sense His love. Draw closer to Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before God chastens us, He instructs us through His word.
